Project: Polymer Trim Width Estimation System developed for the estimation of the width of the polymer trim in the Tetra Pak Lamination Process
Collaborating Industry:
Tetra Pak Arabia (Jeddah Factory)
Year of Completion:
2019
Overview:
In the Tetra Pak lamination process, extrusion coating is used to apply polymer on the board at different stations of the process line. Extra polymer is applied slightly beyond the edges to prevent polymer from missing the edges. To limit this, the extra trim polymer should be measured and kept to a minimum while still limiting the polymer missing rate.
We developed a machine-vision based ‘Polymer Trim Width Estimation System’ that provides an accurate measurement of the width of this trim. The trim widths are measured for both the operator and driver sides and are continuously displayed in the application. Graphs are plotted to view the current trends in these measurements. Additionally, the application communicates with the PLC to retrieve the current status of the machine and to send alarm signals when the measured widths exceed the specified thresholds.
